How Payments Work for Professionals

See the milestone funded before you start, complete the agreed work, get Client approval, and receive your payout exactly seven days later under the 7-Day Rule.

Cash-flow certainty, built in: the Client funds the milestone before you begin. Once the Client approves your work, your payout is scheduled automatically for exactly seven days later.

1. How Your Payout Is Protected

The moment a Client funds a milestone, the money is already sitting in a protected balance — before you’ve even started. Once it’s there, it can’t be pulled back.

Funded before work starts

You can see that the agreed milestone has been funded before committing your time.

Approval triggers payout

Once the Client approves your completed milestone, your payout is scheduled automatically.

2. What Is the Permit Wallet, From Your Side?

The Permit Wallet is the same protected balance that holds the Client’s milestone payment. Once the Client approves your work, your share is set aside and scheduled — you’re not waiting on the Client to personally send you anything.

3. How Payments Are Processed

Every payout moves by Interac e-Transfer through Permit.ca’s regulated payments partner. Link your own Interac-enabled account once through a secure connect flow before your first payout.

4. How Our Payments Partner Is Verified and Registered

Every payout runs through Zūm Rails, a Canadian financial technology gateway — Permit.ca never custody-holds your payout directly.

Federal oversight

A registered Payment Service Provider (PSP), supervised by the Bank of Canada under the Retail Payment Activities Act (RPAA).

Anti-money-laundering compliance

Federally registered as a Money Services Business (MSB) with FINTRAC (Registration Number: M21154590).

Bank-grade data protection

Routing and notifications run in an independently audited, SOC 2 Type II certified environment.

What you may see

Your bank statement or email confirmation may securely display Zūm Rails as the underlying infrastructure provider for your payout — that’s expected, not a red flag.

5. Initiating a Payout

Nothing to trigger manually — once a Client approves a milestone, your payout is scheduled automatically.

6. Getting Paid Milestone by Milestone

You’re paid as each milestone is approved, not in one lump sum at the end — meaningfully better cash flow across a longer project.

7. City & Municipal Fees

Some projects include fees charged directly by the city or municipality for an application, review, filing, or other municipal step. These fees are separate from your professional service price.

If the Client pays the city

Note how and when the Client should pay the municipality so the cost is clear before the application moves forward. Permit.ca does not handle that payment.

If you need to pay the city

Show the amount separately as a pass-through City & Municipal Fee for the Client to fund. If the exact amount is not known yet, you can use an estimate or mark it as TBD until the municipality confirms it.

0% platform fee on City & Municipal Fees. These are pass-through costs paid to the municipality, not your professional revenue, so Permit.ca does not take a platform fee from that amount.

8. What Happens After the Client Approves

Your share moves into your payout queue, and the platform fee is deducted from your share at that same moment — never from the Client’s funds.

9. When You Actually Get Paid — The 7-Day Rule

You are paid exactly seven days after the Client’s approval, every time. The settlement timing behind the scenes changes when the transfer is scheduled, not the day you receive it.

If Interac settles in…Scheduled send is…You receive…
0 hours (already in wallet)7 days laterDay 7
48 hours5 days after settlementDay 7
96 hours (maximum)3 days after settlementDay 7
One fixed promise: exactly seven days after Client approval.

10. How Disputes Affect Your Payout

A dispute opened before your payout is sent puts it on hold while Permit.ca reviews the documented scope, submitted work, and messages.

Once the payout is sent, it’s final — a dispute can’t claw back a payment you’ve already received.

11. Refunds

Clients can be refunded in limited situations — before you’ve started a milestone, or through a reviewed split after partial work.

A refund never comes out of a milestone you’ve already been paid for.

12. Scope Changes and Your Price

Any change to price, milestones, or scope has to be documented on-platform before you proceed — it protects your invoice as much as it protects the Client.

13. Managing Your Payout Method

Your Payouts Hub is your money screen inside Permit.ca. Link or update your Interac payout details any time, with a clear connected status and the date it was linked.

14. Large Milestones Paid in Parts

A big milestone is automatically split into a few Interac transfers to respect transfer and daily limits. You’ll see a couple of linked payments land for one milestone, not one giant transfer.

15. Why We Use Interac

Interac is bank-to-bank, avoids card-network delays, and gives Permit.ca a predictable settlement window — it’s the reason Permit.ca can promise a fixed seven days instead of “it depends.”

16. Tracking What You’ve Earned

Your Payouts Hub shows total earned, what’s still awaiting Client approval, what’s on its way with a day-count toward Day 7, and a full payout history with downloadable invoices.

Common Questions

Do I start work before the milestone is funded?

No. You can see that the Client-funded milestone is already in the Permit Wallet before you start.

When exactly do I get paid?

Exactly seven days after the Client approves your milestone.

Does Permit.ca hold my payout?

No. Payouts run through Zūm Rails, Permit.ca’s regulated payments infrastructure provider. Permit.ca does not custody-hold your payout directly.

Do I pay a platform fee on city or municipal fees?

No. City and municipal fees are treated as pass-through costs, not professional revenue. Permit.ca charges 0% platform fee on those amounts.

Can a dispute stop my payout?

Yes. A dispute opened before the payout is sent pauses it while Permit.ca reviews the documented evidence. Once the payout is sent, it is final.
