How payments work for clients

Fund one milestone at a time, keep your payment protected while the work is being completed, and approve each stage before your professional is paid.

Clients pay no platform fee. You only fund the milestone amount you agreed to. Your payment stays protected until you approve the work.

1. How your payment is protected

Your milestone payment is never handed directly to the professional. It stays in a protected balance until you approve the work attached to that milestone.

Pay for a defined stage

Each milestone has its own scope, deliverable and amount, so you know what you are funding.

You approve before payout

The professional is not paid for that milestone until you review and approve the completed work.

2. What is the Permit Wallet?

The Permit Wallet is the protected balance where your milestone payment sits between funding the work and approving the completed stage.

You do not need to preload or top it up. You simply fund the milestone that is due, and your Payments Hub keeps a record of every funded milestone.

3. How payments are processed

Project payments are made by Interac e-Transfer. Cards, EFT and pre-authorized debit are not used for milestone funding.

4. Who handles the payment?

Permit.ca does not hold or move your money directly. Every Interac e-Transfer runs through Zūm Rails, the regulated financial technology provider behind Permit.ca payments.

Registered with the Bank of Canada

Zūm Rails is a registered Payment Service Provider (PSP), supervised by the Bank of Canada under the Retail Payment Activities Act (RPAA).

Registered with FINTRAC

Zūm Rails is federally registered as a Money Services Business (MSB) with FINTRAC. Registration number: M21154590.

SOC 2 Type II environment

Transaction notifications and real-time routing run in an independently audited, SOC 2 Type II certified environment.

You may see the Zūm Rails name

Your bank statement or email confirmation may show Zūm Rails as the underlying payment provider. That is expected.

5. How to make a payment

Link an Interac-enabled bank account once through the secure connection flow. After that, funding a milestone takes only a few clicks.

6. Funding a project

You fund one milestone at a time. The next milestone becomes available after the previous one is approved, so you are never funding more than one stage of work at once.

1

Choose the milestone

Review the agreed scope, deliverable and amount.

2

Pay by Interac e-Transfer

Fund the milestone through your linked Interac-enabled bank account.

3

Track it in your Payments Hub

The funded milestone appears with its date and payment status.

7. What happens after you approve a milestone?

Once you approve the completed work, the funds move out of the protected balance, your professional’s payout is scheduled, and the platform fee is set aside from the professional’s share.

No platform fee for clients: the fee is paid by the professional, not added to your milestone amount.

8. When does your professional get paid?

Your professional is paid exactly seven days after you approve the milestone. Approval starts the fixed seven-day payout clock.

That seven-day window stays the same even if the underlying Interac settlement happens sooner.

9. What happens if there is a dispute?

You can raise a dispute before approving a milestone, or after approval as long as the payout has not yet been sent.

The payout is paused

While the dispute is open, the payout does not continue through the normal payment flow.

Permit.ca reviews the record

The documented scope, submitted work and on-platform messages are reviewed before a decision is made.

Once a payout has been sent, it cannot be pulled back.

10. Can you get a refund?

Yes, in specific situations. If the professional has not started that milestone, you may receive a full refund. If some of the work has already been completed, the amount can be reviewed and split between you and the professional.

Refunds are returned by Interac e-Transfer.

11. What if the scope changes?

Any change to the scope, milestones or price needs to be documented on Permit.ca before the professional continues with the extra work.

A change discussed in a call, text or email is not part of the paid agreement unless it is documented on the platform.

12. Managing your Payments Hub

Your Payments Hub gives you one place to manage payment details and review what you have funded across your projects.

Linked payment methodView or update your Interac-enabled account details.
Milestone historySee funded milestones with dates and current status.
Downloadable recordsKeep invoices and payment records for your files.

13. What happens with larger milestone payments?

If a milestone is too large for a single Interac transfer, Permit.ca automatically splits it into a few linked transfers to stay within per-transfer and daily sending limits.

You simply approve each linked transfer. There is nothing extra to set up.

14. Why does Permit.ca use Interac?

Bank-to-bank payments

Interac moves money directly through Canadian banking infrastructure.

No card details

You do not need to enter card information to fund a project milestone.

Predictable settlement

The payment flow gives Permit.ca a predictable settlement window for the fixed seven-day payout promise.

Built for Canadian users

Interac is a familiar way for Canadian clients and professionals to send and receive project payments.

15. Keeping track of what you’ve spent

Your Payments Hub shows every milestone you have funded across your projects, including dates, payment status and downloadable invoices for your records.
